May 8 to 14, McGuffey Healthcare will unite with organizations all over the nation in honoring National Skilled Nursing Care Week (NSNCW). Skilled nursing care facilities, also known as nursing homes, and their staff provide a steadfast commitment to providing high-level of care for their residents. This has never been more evident than the last two years during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to protecting and caring for their residents around the clock during a time of limited visitation and social distancing, staff stepped in and served as family members and friends to ensure that residents had the essential social connections they needed.

Support for residents

The NSNCW observance recognizes the role of skilled nursing care centers, such as McGuffey Healthcare, in caring for America’s seniors and individuals with disabilities. The theme for this year’s national observance is “Creating and Nurturing Connections. Residents, family members and communities have seen first-hand the positive impact of seniors and the disabled living together in a neighborly environment where people look after each other and where enriching programs for wellness and entertainment, dining services and supportive services help support physical and mental wellbeing.

Established by the American Health Care Association (AHCA) in 1967, NSNCW, formerly known as National Nursing Home Week, provides an opportunity for residents and their loved ones, staff, volunteers and surrounding communities to acknowledge the role of skilled nursing care centers in caring for America’s seniors and individuals with disabilities.

Quality of life

Skilled nursing care centers across the nation support their residents by helping them find happiness and improve their quality of life. Skilled nursing care centers are an important part of their communities because they ensure that seniors and disabled people still have a means for engaging with society through their individual passions. Whether it’s through their musical talents, arts and crafts or gardening, nursing center residents add richness to the communities around them.

These centers also provide a home away from home for residents, where they can get their medical and emotional needs met in a caring environment. Each person in the skilled nursing care community contributes to improving the quality of life of all residents by providing a home away from home that allows them to have the essential connections they need to thrive.

Lots of activities

McGuffey Healthcare will kick off NSNCW with a special tea for Mother’s Day Sunday. Monday, we will celebrate Wild, West Day that will include gem mining, a lasso competition, hot dog, and root beer floats. Tuesday is Carnival Day and will feature games, attractions and carnival snacks. Wednesday, we will have Bad to the Bone Day with a hamburger cookout, axe throwing, beer tasting, corn hole and craps. Thursday will be Beach Day with margaritas and daiquiris, beach ball toss, shuffle board and volleyball.
